MADISON – Bo Ryan and the Wisconsin Badgers will see a familiar face inside the Kohl Center in late November during the annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
Tony Bennett, son of former UW coach Dick Bennett, and his Virginia Cavaliers will square off with Wisconsin on Nov. 28 in a matchup of two 2012 NCAA tournament teams.
The meeting will mark just the third encounter between the schools and the first since the Badgers knocked off the Cavaliers on a neutral court in 1998. Virginia won the first meeting in 1974, also on a neutral court.
Wisconsin returns a strong contingent of 2012 contributors, including Ryan Evans, Jared Berggren, Josh Gasser, Mike Bruesewitz and Ben Brust. High school standout Sam Dekker will join the program in time for summer conditioning.
The Badgers lost by one point to No. 1 seed Syracuse in the ‘Sweet 16’ round of the most recent tournament. Virginia, a No. 10 seed, lost to No. 7 Florida in the tournament’s second round.
Bennett served as an assistant at UW for four years (1999-03) under his father, Brad Soderberg and Ryan. He relished an integral role in the recruitment of Badger legend Devin Harris.
The matchup between Wisconsin and Virginia should also offer plenty of defense. Both teams allowed less than 55 points per game, placing them among the nations best in the scoring defense category.
No tip time or network has been determined as of yet.
